Item Description...
Product Description Lisbeth Salander---the heart of Larsson's two previous novels---is under close supervision in the intensive care unit of a Swedish city hospital. She's fighting for her life in more ways than one: when she's well enough, she'll stand trial for three murders. With the help of her friend, journalist Mikael Blomkvist, she will have to prove her innocence, and to identify the corrupt politicians who have allowed the vulnerable, like herself, to suffer abuse. And, on her own, she will plot her revenge---against the man who tried to kill her and the government institutions that very nearly destroyed her life.
Once upon a time, she was a victim. Now Lisbeth Salander is ready to fight back.

 | Too bad that this is the last book that Larsson completed. Dec 30, 2009 |
| Wonderful characters, interesting setting, full of surprises, suspect that translation misses some of the impact. | | | | A must-read for fans of this trilogy, but... Dec 29, 2009 |
For the ending of this book alone, it is worth reading. However, while I wish I could say that this book was of the same caliber as that of the prior two books, in my opinion it was not. The book picked up right where the last left off, with Salander in the hospital being treated for her injuries. Blomkvist continues to sleuth on her behalf in order to expose those who have made her life hellish and attempted to frame her for all manner of crimes. Of course, in his spare time he also still manages to attract every woman within a 500-yard-radius like a bee to honey, but I digress. All of the other familiar characters from the prior books return.
I don't want to spoil the plot of the book, so I will give a general review. The overall feel of the book to me is that it was the least edited and least considered of the three. This would make sense if Larsson had intended to go back and do some more tweaking and editing before publication, but he was obviously unable to do so after his death. There are entire sections of the book that meander on and on with no apparent purpose with regard to moving the story forward. These sections would have benefited greatly from some serious editorial paring.
To me, the plot did not at all move along at the same clip as the prior books. The suspense just wasn't there to the same degree. I recall that I simply could not put down the previous books, but I was nowhere near as riveted by this one. In addition, there were a number of somewhat annoying grammatical errors, sentence fragments, etc.
For the good points of the book, the ending (if that is what we can call the last 150-200 pages) is a very nice, tightly written section that ties everything together beautifully. Again, it struck me that perhaps Larsson had written the ending earlier than the rest of book three, as it appeared to be the best-constructed section of the entire book. For the ending alone, this story is worth reading. I wavered between a 3-and 4- star review for this reason. Ultimately, I considered whether the book, standing alone without the other two, would be a 4-star book, and I don't believe that would be the case.
As an aside, one minor issue is that on the book cover of the copy I picked up while in Belgium, the first blurb says "The Trial", as if the book is mostly about Salander's trial itself, which it is not. The trial itself takes up about the last tenth of the book. Whether this type of advertising will occur with the North American edition I don't know, but I write this warning simply so you might know what to expect.
In summary, anyone who has read the first two books simply will not be able to deny themselves the final installment, nor should they. Although I did not find the book to hold the same level of suspense and I sometimes found it rather dull, the ending of the book makes it very worthwhile reading. It is a great loss that Mr. Larsson passed away before he could really fine-tune the final book, and before he could write another. | | | | A worthy conclusion of a great story-telling of your non-typical heroine. I dare you to put it down! Dec 27, 2009 |
It might look redundant to read all reviews and praise for Stieg Larsson final chapter of his Millennium trilogy, but for you to really know what all the fuzz is about, you have to have been immersed in the complex and exhilarating world of Lisbeth Salander.
The girl who kicked the hornets' nest start at the very exact point its predecessor (The girl who played with fire) ends, and I have to say that along with all the thousands (if not millions) of followers of Salander's saga, not only my expectations were high, but I guess as it happens with any series that came to a conclusion, you say to yourself " This has to be VERY GOOD in order to not spoil the momentum that the previous chapters might built in you", well, I join my fellow reviewers in saying that this book delivers and then some.
All the main characters are still here, and even some new are introduced to the story, and it is true that at some point, you might sense that you lose track of what is happening with whom, yet Larsson magnificent writing help the reader to get back on track and into the amazing conclusion of a well written story.
To properly understand and enjoy at its fullest the exhilarating conclusion of this trilogy, you have to have read the 2 previous chapters of this novel. At 600 pages, I have to say that at the 200 mark, I have the curiously sentiment that the ending for this novel will be a powerful one, and I have to say I was not mistaken.
What we have learn from Salander and her personal history before joining Milton Security or even knowing thru(and even developing some type of a relationship)journalist Mikael Bloomkist, will be beautifully described, complemented and perfectly accommodate to the story that will conclude with a trial that will give you goose bumps and a face to face showdown with someone of Salander's past.
There is no doubt in my mind, this is by far one of the best thriller novel that you will ever find, so for rejoice or just to say goodbye to a wonderful novel history, pick this one as soon as is available, your eyes would not stop reading, your heart will not stop pounding, and you will be joining the legions of admirers and supporters of one very interesting anti-hero named Lisbeth Salander.
| | | | Steig Larsson Dec 23, 2009 |
| A wonderful new writer, sorry he left us so young! Stay with this first one and you'll cry for more...couldn't wait to read the 2nd in the series, already bought the 3rd in UK. Much characterization which can take more time to digest-but worth it! The intrigue and suspense is well-achieved as you progress, and then you can't put it down. With intro of Lisbeth, Steig has crafted a totally, new character for today's world. And you have the "good" in Mikel fighting "evil" with both Lisbeth's and his own enemies. Predict trilogy will have a cult following that only grows! | | | | The girl who kicked the hornet's nest Dec 21, 2009 |
| For the third time, Steig Larsson delivers. (Too bad the US publishers didn't on this latest and last of the unbelievably popular Millennium Series--apparently they are waiting for some unfathomable reason known only to the inner world of publishing. I know people who paid upwards of 50 dollars for this book. I only paid 12 pounds + shipping by purchasing Hornet's Nest from the UK.) I am savoring every page, every word of this brilliant crime/political/social commentary novel. It is devastating to know that this talented author will not be delivering any more novels. | | | Write your own review about The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest
