Item Description... Most literature and many aid efforts concerned with poverty relief and development function on mathematical assumptions. Those who havemore should share with those who have less, thus creating equality. Some would add a moral component saying that those having more aremorally wrong and must have gained their surplus from outright theft or unfair trade. But on the side of the needy, religious and secular efforts see only a material problem. Both neglect the devastating power of bad ideas based in religion and social customs. Yet what anyone believes about the building blocks of life will have results; their ideas are like eye glasses that either distort or bring into focus an objective reality.Development work must focus on developing people?'s ideas. Cultural change must precede material changes. |

Reviews - What do our customers think?
 | The best book yet on third world development Apr 9, 2009 |
I'd been after Udo for years to write this book, when he'd visit this area to speak at L'Abri, having heard him speak on poverty and third world development. He has unique and extremely crucial ideas for this whole area.
It is out!
Why do so many development efforts fail? What happens to the hard work and sacrificially given dollars? Why did the West grow and develop compared to the rest of the world? What can be done to help the poor? Poor regions? Poor countries?
This book is a critical contribution to effective development and relief. | | | | A Great Book Jan 13, 2009 |
This is a great book because it tells the truth. It is about facts, and is not about religion. The book is full of content, and speaks to the mind and heart. It is not written in technical or religious language. It is a powerful blowing breeze of fresh air in a stale world of fatalistic ideas of hopelessness.
The book's cover and title may not entice, but if you read the book, then you understand the title and cover far better. The author has experience and a clear way of thinking and writing that is amazing to me. Here in our crazy age of irrationality and chaos comes a man who thinks in such a clear way! Marvelous!
This author's one work is worth 20k volumes you find in religious book stores. And I recommend just as highly his recent other work called "The Innocence of God." Outstanding! Both are worth every penny!
